Lot 071

1966 Austin-Healey 3000 MKIII BJ-8 Conv.

  • Chassis no. HBJ8L27337

Sold for $57,200

150bhp 2912cc. overhead valve inline six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, independent front suspension with wishbones and sway bars and rear live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and sway bars, front disc with rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 92"

The final version of the “big” Healey sixes was the BJ8, introduced in 1963 and built through 1967. Fitted with twin 2-in. SU HD8 carburetors, the six-cylinder engine produced 150hp (up from the 132-134hp in the prior model BJ7) and 173 ft-lb of torque. The Mk III also got a revised exhaust system that would actually clear a low speed bump without ripping itself to shreds, finally rectifying a situation that had plagued Austin-Healeys since 1953. Passenger accommodations included the rollup side windows introduced on the BJ7 three years earlier, and a more luxuriously trimmed interior with wood-faced dashboard and center console. Under the hood a previously optional vacuum brake booster for the disc/drum brakes was made standard.

The BJ-8 offered here is finished in the desirable Healey Ice Blue, with Navy Blue “Ambla” trim and Navy blue top with matching top boot (both finished in correct “Everflex”) material. Marque specialists performed a professional, nut and bolt, ground up restoration to the highest Concours standards. The body panels and chassis were stripped to bare metal. The chassis was then sealed, primed and painted with catalyzed polyurethane enamel.

The panel fit is excellent. All mechanical components were restored or replaced without regard for expense. A new stainless steel exhaust was fitted and all chrome was replaced or re-plated. 60-spoke stainless/chrome Dayton wire wheels were fitted with 175x15 Michelin Radial tires. The restoration was completed just one month prior to auction.

With the added power and creature comforts, this BJ-8 will surely provide pleasure to its next owner in any conditions whether they are touring or show. This example comes complete with a photo album of the restoration, spare tire and rim, owner’s handbook, knock off hammer, and BMIHT certificate verifying that this is a numbers matching car.
