1931 Chrysler New Series Six CM Roadster

Sold for $46,200

78hp 218 cu. in. inline six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, live axle suspension with leaf springs and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase 116"

Chrysler’s 1931 New Series Six marked the next evolution of their automobiles as visual appearance was integrated with mechanical design from the model’s inception. Introduced early in 1931 along with a complete redesign of Chrysler products, the New Series Six had been developed by Herb Henderson and designer Herb Weissinger in Chrysler’s newly established Art and Color section. Taking advantage of the engineering team’s adaptability, Weissinger created some of the most attractive and practical automobiles of the classic

era. A low profile was part of the 1931 Chryslers’ concept and Weissinger achieved the dual goal of lowering the cars’ center of gravity for better ride and handling while at the same time giving Chryslers a distinctive and more modern appearance.

It would be another generation before Chrysler adopted “the forward look” as its design slogan, although it could of more accurately been applied to the 1931 Chryslers, so different and progressive was their design.

The New Series Six, designated as model CM, incorporated Henderson’s and Weissinger’s lower profile implemented by a double-drop frame. Defined visually by a vradiator,

sweeping fenders, cowl vents, vertical hood louvers and bullet headlights the New Series Six

appeared far more luxurious and expensive than its prices of less than $1,000. Well appointed and equipped, it was a success with 38,817 built during the first year’s production. Powered by Chrysler’s redesigned inline six-cylinder engine making 78 horsepower, up 10 horsepower from the previous year, the New Series Six had plenty of performance to go with its sporty appearance. Only 2,281 Chrysler New Series Sixes were the sporty roadster offered here.

This 1931 Chrysler New Series Six CM Roadster is a very early example from this watershed year. It has been carefully used and preserved following a sympathetic restoration in the 1970s, which importantly started with a good, sound original car. Presented in green with a tan interior and top, and light yellow wire wheels, its restorations quality and attention to detail shows in the overall good condition in which it has endured. Nicely equipped, it has a rumble seat, dual sidemounts, wide whitewalls, luggage trunk and wind wings and is ready to be used and enjoyed by a collector who appreciates the engineering quality, advanced features, excellent performance and – most significantly – the pioneering design. Design using elegance and styling the 1931 Chrysler CM began that would continue to distinguish Chryslers through the thirties.
