The Studebaker brothers, Henry and Clem, established a wagon shop in South Bend, Indiana, in 1852 with a total capital of just $68.00. Migration to the western territories, the Indian Wars, and orders from settlers and the U.S. Army for covered wagons brought them great success; the company was grossing $350,000.00 annually by 1867. Joined later by three more brothers, Studebaker offered its first electric vehicle in 1902 and its first gasoline-powered car by 1904.

In the Twenties, the company offered three series in ascending order: the Dictator, the Commander, and the top-of-the-line President. With the introduction of the President in 1927, Studebaker entered the exclusive luxury car market, no doubt influencing the company’s 1928 purchase of the legendary Pierce-Arrow. The Art Deco styling of the President and quality of its coachwork was equal to that of any of the grand American marques of the era. All Presidents rode a 135-in. wheelbase with power supplied by a 122-hp 337-cu. in. straight-eight engine. Studebakers are known for their excellent performance and drivability, as evidenced by numerous endurance records, Pikes Peak hill climbs, and Indianapolis 500 appearances at the time.

Studebaker built 6,340 Model 80 Presidents in 1931; some 54 Four Seasons Roadsters are known to survive, including this example. It was subjected to a comprehensive nut and bolt restoration completed in August 2005. Today, the engine compartment, undercarriage, chassis, and interior reflect little use and are as restored more than 10 years ago. Finished in a subtle, but attractive pale grey body with darker grey fenders and running boards while accented by a red beltline, wire wheels, and leather interior, this CCCA Full Classic has quite a striking appearance. A black cloth convertible top with red accents and dual side-mount spare tires are fitted with matching black cloth covers, and strap-on rear view mirrors are included. A rumble seat and golf club compartment, as well as Studebaker’s distinctive “Ovaloid” headlamps, complete the look for a most handsome automobile.

Whether showing or touring, this rare and unique automobile will no doubt impress.
