Car enthusiasts and Ferrari collectors from across the globe descended on Maranello, Italy this past weekend for RM Auctions’ second annual “Ferrari Leggenda e Passione” auction event. They witnessed a new auction record established for a spectacular 1961 Ferrari California Spyder formerly owned by actor James Coburn. The rare car exceeded all expectations by selling for a world record auction price for a vintage car at auction in the amount of $10,894,400 U.S., surpassing the previous record set at Sotheby's Monaco in 1990 for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at $10,756,000 USD. Other notable highlights included a late entry 1964 Ferrari 250 LM which sold for $6,979,225 USD and a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder which sold for $3,659,837.
Southern California – for car collectors, the mere mention of the place evokes more than the classic images of sun-washed beaches and glamorous celebrities. For true enthusiasts, the star attraction is the most uniquely creative car culture in the country – a culture fed by a certain pioneering spirit and personified by many of the greatest builders, racers, gear-heads, customizers, and collectors who, for decades now, have pushed the envelope of automotive design and engineering.
Joe MacPherson contributed immeasurably to this culture, not only in its development but also in the preservation of its rich history.
