Welcome to the November edition of RM’s E-news for Journalists!

With our 2009 auction season now over, planning is well underway for our 2010 auction calendar. Despite the economic climate, 2009 proved vibrant for RM Auctions. Our events worldwide continued to attract strong international interest, post solid results and set new world records. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the record-breaking sale of the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa at the Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione event in May, which saw RM smash its own world record for the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction. RM proudly holds five of the top ten – and more significantly, four of the top five – all time records for the most expensive motor cars ever to be sold at auction. To view RM's top 10 sales from 2009, please click here.

Looking ahead to the New Year, RM will kick off the 2010 auction season in grand style, January 21 – 22, with its highly anticipated Automobiles of Arizona event, incorporating the exclusive 'The British Are Coming' evening auction. The Arizona event will be followed by the distinguished Automobiles of Amelia Island event on March 13 which will see RM return to Florida as the official auction house of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. The Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event, traditionally held in February, will be held March 26-28 to round out an exciting month of auction action in the sunshine state. Another important date change for 2010 is that of the Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook event, next year scheduled for July 24, followed by the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance on July 25. For a complete copy of our 2010 calendar, please click here.

MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

STRIKING CHRYSLER THUNDERBOLT JOINS CONCEPT CAR LINE-UP IN ARIZONA

RM Auctions will lift the gavel on a striking 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt Concept Car by LeBaron at its 11th annual Automobiles of Arizona event at the Phoenix Biltmore Resort & Spa this January. Regarded as one of the world's first true concept cars - and one of the cars that positioned Chrysler at the forefront of automotive styling in the early 1940s – this sleek and rare example is one of just five originally built and one of only four left in existence. Featuring a fully retractable copper roof with copper bumpers and trim work and contrasting green exterior, this multi-award winning motor car has been fully restored and has enjoyed considerable success as a show car, including at this year’s famed Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Its sale in Arizona presents a unique ownership opportunity.

The eye-catching Thunderbolt headlines an impressive line-up of other concept and dream cars set for RM’s Arizona auction block, including a recently restored 1954 Mercury XM-800 Dream Car, the 1956 Cadillac Maharani Motorama Show Car, a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado 'Raindrop' Motorama Dream Car, and an all-original 1956 Chrysler Plainsman Concept Car by Ghia, presented in ‘as found’ condition. For those with a penchant for more modern automotive design, also on offer will be a 1995 Ford GT90 Concept Car, unveiled at the 1995 Detroit Auto Show as “the world's mightiest supercar,” as well as a 1995 Lincoln Sentinel ‘Styling Buck.’

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR RM AUTO RESTORATION

2009 proved yet again that RM’s restoration division, RM Auto Restoration, is among the leading restoration facilities in North America – if not the world – winning awards for their customers at one concours after another.

At Pebble Beach, Bill Johnston’s 1938 Talbot-Lago T150C-SS Figoni et Falaschi Coupe achieved Best in Class in the European Classic Closed class, the Art Center College of Design Award, and Most Elegant Closed Car.

Amelia Island saw Skip and Judy Barber’s 1938 Lagonda LG6 Rapide Drop Head Coupe win Best in Class in the European Classic Pre-War (1936-1939) class at the concours there, as well as the Patterson Collection’s 1936 Delahaye Type 135 Competition Coupe win the People’s Choice Award. Also at Amelia Island was Tim Durham’s 1933 Auburn 8-98 Chrome Retractable Roof Coupe which won an Amelia Award in the American Classic Open (1932-1934) class.

The Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance awarded Roger Willbanks’ 1934 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Boattail Speedster with the Debut Award and Lawrence and Suzanne Markey’s 1929 Rolls-Royce Springfield Phantom I Brewster with Best in Class in the Best Rolls-Royce Phantom class.

Long-time RM friends and clients Joseph and Margie Cassini had a particularly successful year, winning Best of Show at four of five concours events they attended – with different cars at each one! Their 2004 Pebble Beach winner, a 1938 Horch 853A Special Roadster by Erdmann & Rossi, won Best of Show at the Cincinnati Ault Park Concours, while a 1933 Duesenberg SJ Beverly took Best of Show – Domestic at the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance.

ARIZONA PREPARES FOR BRITISH INVASION

RM Auctions will celebrate the best of British automakers in January at its eagerly anticipated The British Are Coming event in Phoenix, Arizona. Scheduled for Thursday, January 21st, the exclusive evening sale will act as a prelude to RM’s traditional Friday auction and feature 60 automobiles, many to be offered without reserve. Amongst the splendid line-up is an exceptional Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Three Position Drophead Coupe with coachwork by H.J. Mulliner. Chassis 120SK, it is one of the last PII Continental chassis built and consequently, the coachwork is more highly developed than earlier attempts had been. One of just three similar cars built, it was commissioned by Jack Barclay’s for Lord Numburholm of Bryanston Square, London in May1934.

RM COMMITTED TO PRESERVING THE CRAFT OF AUTO RESTORATION

RM founder Rob Myers recently stopped by a local high school to review and offer advice about the restoration of a 1917 Model 'T' Ford pickup that RM donated to the school earlier this year. With the Model T disassembled in pieces around the shop and the restoration process well underway, Rob discussed the next steps with students and teachers alike at Lambton Kent Composite School (LKCS) in Dresden, Ontario.

Tyler Curtis, an LKCS student who has been assisting in the restoration, noted that “it is cool to see what the car looks like torn apart” and has seen his interest in restoring cars increase since the project began. Fellow student Brandon Martin acknowledged that “to get to work on something as old as this” presents a unique opportunity – one that he is interested in taking advantage of. Both Tyler and Brandon agreed that seeing the inner workings of an old truck, without all the computers and components of modern-day vehicles, helped to deepen their understanding of the fundamentals of how automobiles work.

The restoration project will give the students first-hand experience with the skills required to restore a classic car, from the wood-work on the body panels to the mechanical work that will be necessary to return it to running condition. Mike McGrail, one of the teachers of LKCS’ Shop Program, noted that the project was completely different from anything his students had taken on before, and he believes it will result in the students “developing hands-on skills that can be used in real life.”

Nurturing the students who are passionate about restoration work is a goal of the program that Rob Myers began, and he hopes to inspire students to strive for excellence. “The nicer the piece is done, the more money is achieved at auction,” Rob reminded the students, referencing his commitment to auction the truck once it is completed, with the proceeds going back into the school’s shop program. As an added incentive, students identified by shop teachers Mike McGrail and Greg Teasdale as being particularly talented with the restoration work will get to attend the auction, complete with perks such as traveling to the auction location on the RM corporate jet.

Through this initiative, Rob is also looking to cultivate the next generation of craftsman for the world-renowned RM Auto Restoration facility. LKCS student Brandon Martin will also complete his co-op placement next term working under the direct tutelage of RM’s award-winning restorers.

A total of six vintage trucks have been donated to different high schools located in RM’s backyard of Chatham-Kent, Ontario as part of this educational program.

RM’S UK OFFICE LENDS A HAND…AND A VOICE
