Lot 229

1947 Ford Super Deluxe Club Convertible

  • Serial no. 043H47-207395

Sold for $42,900

  • Offered from the collection of the late-Don Gibson
  • Early Ford V-8 Club of America Dearborn Award winner in 1986
  • An older restoration that presents beautifully in Maize Yellow

Fords changed very little for the 1947 model year. With the demand for new cars continuing at a pace that was virtually impossible for the manufacturers to meet, they saw little need to waste time and money in changing styles not needed to induce sales. Most obvious updates were the parking lamps, which went from rectangular to circular and were relocated below the headlamps, as well as a revised grille and detail changes to the headlight bezels.

The Convertible Coupe or Club Convertible, model 51A-76, was part of the top-of-the-line Super Deluxe series and came standard with the ubiquitous flathead V-8. The Super Deluxe included a chrome horn ring, two sun visors, armrests on all doors, passenger assist straps, and horizontal chrome trim on the body; differentiating it from lesser siblings. For the first time, the convertible did not use genuine leather seating. Instead, the seat material was a combination of artificial leather with Bedford cord inserts, or all artificial leather. At $1,740, Ford built 22,159 for the model year.

This stunning example is finished in the popular shade of Maize Yellow with a red-accented black canvas roof and red interior. It is offered from the collection of the late-Don Gibson, having remained in his possession since purchased in 1977. Restored by him to authentic and exacting standards, little more than 1,050 miles have been traveled since completion. The car was honored with a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V-8 Club of America in 1986, and the plaque and judging sheets are included with the sale. As with all of Gibson’s cars, the quality of the restoration is superb. It has been driven and maintained annually and as one of Gibson’s favorite cars, presents beautifully, and will be a welcome addition to any collection of significant Fords.
