Lot 150

1939 Mercedes-Benz 320 Pullman Limousine

  • Chassis no. 421018

Sold for £92,400

77 bhp, 3,408 cc inline six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, wishbone and transverse-spring front suspension, coil-spring swing axle rear suspension, and four-wheel hydraulically actuated drum brakes. Wheelbase: 3,302 mm

Mercedes-Benz introduced the full-size 320 as a successor to the 290. Equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine that produces 77 brake horsepower and a four-speed synchromesh transmission, the 320 was well suited for long-distance touring in comfort. This particular long-wheelbase chassis is fitted with the factory Pullman limousine body. The black exterior was refinished some time ago, with no major blemishes evident. Accordingly, most of the major chrome adornments have been re-plated and show some light patina from age. A set of wing-mounted parking lights and dual side-mounted spare tyres give this limousine a stately appearance, and they also display only light patina. The disc wheels are finished in body colour black and are adorned with black paint-detailed chrome centre covers. A very charming feature of this Limousine is the soft sun roof that extends the full length of the top, which is a welcome feature on a warm day.

The tidy engine bay was freshened some time ago and appears functional and correct, whilst the underside has only required light freshening and appears largely original. The interior of this elegant Limousine is finished in black vinyl on the driver’s seat and door panels, with matching black carpeting lining the floor, which exhibits light wear. The wood trim in the driver’s compartment has also been refinished, and a partition of wood and glass, which separates the rear passenger compartment from the driver’s, is clad is similarly rich wood trimmings and small glove boxes.

The rear passenger compartment is trimmed in grey cloth and incorporates two fold-away jump seats for extra passengers. The elegant chrome adornments display a soft patina. An attractive braided rope handle, which is mounted to the partition wall, is a reminder that this Limousine was built to be an elegant chauffer-driver automobile. Rounding out the stately style is an integral trunk on the rear, which provides all the required storage capacity needed for touring. This example is awaiting the next owner to enjoy it as it was intended, for touring in elegance.
