Lot 147

1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 SWB Saloon

  • Chassis no. 100.012.12000786

Sold for £47,040

250 hp, 6,332 cc SOHC V-8 engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, four-speed automatic transmission, double wishbone hydraulic front suspension, low-pivot swing-axle rear suspension, adjustable hydraulic self-levelling, and four-wheel servo-assisted hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 3,302 mm

As a worthy successor to the 770 Grosser Mercedes of the past, the all-new 600 saloon debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963. Representing state-of-the-art automotive engineering in just about every department, the newcomer featured an overhead camshaft, fuel-injected 6.3-litre V-8 engine, air suspension with variable ride control, a four-speed automatic transmission, all-around disc brakes, power-assisted steering, central locking, and separate heating and ventilation systems for the front and rear compartments. Built in saloon and nine-passenger LWB limousine forms, which made it beloved by heads of State, the imposing heavyweight 600 was endowed with respectable performance nonetheless, reaching 60 mph in a little under 10 seconds and exceeding 125 mph flat out.

The example offered here is the shorter wheelbase variant that would have had the affluent owner/driver behind the wheel with much pride. The gold metallic paint has been maintained from new and still presents especially well. The chrome throughout is also original, showing only slight age for a 50-year-old car, and the amber Bosch fog lamps are a welcomed accessory to the front bumper. Showing only 30,791 miles on the odometer, it is apparent that all of the tobacco-brown leather upholstery has been especially well cared-for, as it only shows the typical wear of a low-mile original. The remainder of the interior is of equally high standards, with only slight discoloration to be found on the headliner nearest the massive sunroof. The door gaps and panel alignment is commensurate with factory standards, whilstthe weatherstripping is still original and in serviceable condition. Mercedes-Benz 600s continue to be a very sought-after commodity, as they still represent the finest available from Mercedes-Benz, and they were only superseded by the revitalised Maybach. This example is sure to meet the standards of one seeking a very original and unchanged example.
