1964 Riva Ariston "Swift II"

  • Hull no. 589

Sold for €78.400

177 hp, 290 cu. in. Chrysler Sea VM80 V-8 marine engine. Length: 6.70 m Width: 2.16 m Weight: 1,360 kg

  • A classic Riva design
  • Originally delivered and used on the French Riviera
  • Restored by marque specialists Arcangeli

For the two decades between 1950 and 1970, Riva experienced a golden age under the direction of Carlo Riva, whose stated aim was to simply build the finest motor boats in the world. Amongst the limited range of single- and twin-engine models, the varnished mahogany lines of the Ariston are considered the purest form, and they have become known as the archetypal post-war classic motor boats. The proportions form a subtle balance, with long curves that do not make concessions to practical aspects that invaded the design of other boat manufacturers in the 1950s. Its beautiful extended-bridge cockpit and rounded stern recalls the classic Chris-Craft “barrelback” design of the late 1930s.

Ariston buyers included in their ranks many important personalities from the worlds of business, art, and entertainment, including Gunther Sachs and Peter Sellers. The craft offered here, hull number 589, was ordered in 1964 by Darier Hentsch, a well-known financier from Geneva whose bank is today part of the Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch group. As a 1964 model, Swift II featured a redesigned hull and bow, meeting the needs of customers who were increasingly navigating at sea, as well as on lakes, and requiring a craft that could pass easily through high waves. It was equipped, as it is today, with a 177-horsepower Chrysler Sea VM80 V-8 marine engine.

Its new owner intended to use it on the French Riviera and had it delivered through exclusive French Riva importer Monaco Boat Service. Whilst in his possession, it was often seen moored at St. Tropez. Following the Hentsch family’s ownership, it was purchased by an Italian enthusiast, and it has since resided in its home country, being owned for some years by the wife of the owner of one of Tuscany’s most prized vineyards. In the late 2000s, the craft was entrusted to Centro Nautico Salo, better known as Arcangeli, a specialised firm on Lake Garda to whom numerous Italian collectors entrust their Riva for restorations. The restoration of hull number 589 is to original specifications in its materials, colours, and appearance, making this wonderful, traditional Riva a truly timeless classic amongst classics.

Moteur V-8 Chrysler Sea VM80 marine, 290 ci (4,7 litres), 177 ch. Longueur: 6,70 m. Largeur: 2,16 m. Poids: 1 360 kg.
