  • Offered from the Jim Click Ford Performance Collection
  • One of three 1969 Boss 302 Mustangs prepared by Shelby for the 1969 Trans-Am Series
  • Raced by Peter Revson and Horst Kwech when new
  • The only surviving example of its kind

Born as one of three Boss 302s built by Kar Kraft and prepared by Shelby for the 1969 Trans-Am season, the example presented here was the second of three such examples constructed. All three cars were numbered sequentially, with “627” being the first, “628” (the car offered here) as the second, and “629” being the third and last.
For this particular Boss 302, Peter Revson and Horst Kwech were its drivers for the season, and Revson was the first behind the wheel at the car’s inaugural outing at Michigan in May of 1969. Kwech had bad luck with his first outing behind the wheel at Lime Rock that same month, and the car was forced to retire with mechanical problems. Revson was in the driver’s seat for Mid-Ohio in June, finishing 4th overall. Following a DNF at Donnybrooke, the car raced at Bryar Park, where Revson finished 3rd.

At Laguna Seca, Dan Gurney took Kwech’s position and piloted 628 to a 3rd place finish. Gurney returned to the driver’s seat at Kent and finished 10th overall. For the last two races of the season, Revson would pilot 628 at Sears Point and managed a 3rd place finish at Riverside. It is important to note that during this time, 627 and 629 were written off, and 628 became the only surviving team Shelby Boss 302 at the end of the season, emerging remarkably unscathed.

Purchased by Bud Moore for the 1970 season, 628 was put into duty as his back-up car but quickly found its way to the track. It was raced by George Follmer at Lime Rock but recorded a DNF due to engine issues. For its second and last race of the 1970 season and final race as a Bud Moore team car, Parnelli Jones was behind the wheel at St-Jovite and finished 3rd. In its final year of Trans-Am racing, 628 was sold to Try Promotions, who placed it in the hands of Jerry Thompson. Thompson ran nine races in the 1971 season, with his best finish as 3rd overall at Road America in July.

Following its retirement from competition, the car was discovered by Brook Mossgrove of Ohio in 1987 and was fully restored by him to its original specifications. After the restoration was completed, chassis number 628 was sold to Peter Livanos in 1990. He kept the car for the following nine years before selling to Brian Mimaki in April of 1999. During his ownership, it was campaigned by Gary Underwood in historic racing in 2002. The following year, the car was acquired by Jim Click, in whose ownership it has continued to race, campaigning in the Historic Trans-Am Series. About eight years ago, Mr. Click commissioned Don Roberts to build a new engine for chassis number 628, utilizing a Ford 302-cubic inch block. Prior to returning to racing, the brake calipers were fitted with new pads, the rear axle’s bearings and seats were rebuilt along with the car’s suspension uprights. On the vintage racing circuit, the car proved to be highly successful, racing mostly in California at Sears Point, San Diego, and Coronado Island on at least three occasions each, as well as at the Monterey Historics.

Today, as the only surviving example of its kind, chassis number 628 would be a unique addition to any collection of Trans-Am racers or Shelbys, and its return to the Historic Trans-Am Series would be welcomed with open arms.
