In recent years, there has been a trend away from compulsive restoration of old cars. Instead, there is growing interest in preservation of original features and conservation of the patina that only the passage of time can bestow. It has become increasingly common to hear the words “too good to restore;” they apply perfectly to this 1934 Ford.

This car was owned by a gentleman from Hope Ranch Santa Barbara, CA, an area of beautiful large estates. It was always chauffeur maintained. The original wood is exceptional and freshly varnished and the overall appearance is very pleasing. The sheet metal is straight and true, but the original Cordoba Gray paint is thin from polishing and primer shows through in places. There are sections with scratches and scrapes, however those with deeper paint exhibit a very good shine. The brightwork exhibits some tarnish, and scratches. Amazingly, the roof retains its original artificial leather, and is quite presentable.

The seats show wear, but have only minimal splits and tears. The front floor mat is the original brown rubber item, somewhat stained. The rear mat is missing and the dashboard is finished in original body color paint, worn in places. The original instruments are nice, but the 8-day clock in the glove box door has a cracked glass. The windshield glass exhibits some clouding and separation at the edges and corners, and the side curtains show staining on the canvas edges.

The engine compartment is generally clean and presentable, though exhibiting the patina of time. The undercarriage is clean but unrestored, so there is moderate surface rust. The tires are 5.25/5.50-17 Goodyear blackwalls and the Firestone spare in the right front fender may very well be original.

Well-known Ford woodie aficionado James Kirst of Altadena, California purchased this time capsule from the original owner in the late sixties. It had been stored in a warehouse unused for almost 40 years before Nick bought it in 2007 and become just the third owner. The car required only the changing of fluids in order to be road ready. It is currently registered with California black plates FXZ-866. The car starts on the first crank and runs and drives well. The odometer shows 41,685 miles, which are believed to be original.

Many clubs now have exhibit and judging categories for unrestored cars. The Antique Automobile Club of America’s Historic Preservation of Original Features class is one of the fastest growing segments of the hobby. Pertinent to this Ford station wagon is the Early Ford V8 Club’s Rouge Award for unrestored features, where a car can be entered in one or more of the categories: Exterior, Interior or Running Gear. This car has not competed in Club meets, but will be eligible should a new owner be so inclined.
