Lot 113

1937 Ford Deluxe Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 184005090

Sold for $121,000

Model 78. 85 bhp, 221 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia two-speed rear end, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 112"

The new Lincoln-Zephyr had a huge influence on the 1937 Fords. The pointed prow, penned by designer E.T. “Bob” Gregorie, was a direct takeoff, as were the teardrop-shaped headlights recessed into the fenders. The first Ford with an “alligator” hood, it was also novel in placing the battery in the engine compartment.

The V8 engine was revised for better cooling, placing the water pumps at the bottom and moving the water outlets to the middle of the cylinder heads. This configuration would endure for more than a decade. The rod-operated mechanical brakes gave way to a cable arrangement.

Station wagons received some updates of their own. A bench replaced the individual seats in the second row, located to the left so that passengers could easily access the third seat via the right side. The raised platform for the third seat was also rounded at the front corner, also for passenger access. For the first time there was a liftgate, with a glass window, at the rear. This was held up by sliding stays, secured by thumbscrews, when open. The frame rails below the windows were made smooth, and jointed rods replaced leather-covered chains as tailgate supports. The Deluxe Accessory Group had become so popular that a separate series of body numbers, signified by “B,” was adopted.

Acquired in September 1997, this 1937 station wagon came out of long-term storage. Unrestored except for refinishing of the wood and reupholstering of the front seat cushion, it is a prime example of originality. The wood body is structurally sound, and all doors shut well with even gaps. The sheet metal is straight and true, the only flaws being mottled patches and scratches in the Autumn Brown paint, and some wear to the fender welting. The roof is covered in original brown imitation leather, which exhibits some cracks.

The brightwork is generally very good, the stainless trim appearing original and the bumpers apparently rechromed, although the front has some scratches. The running board rubber is slightly worn. The car has the newly-available sliding glass side windows in rear doors and quarters, and the glass liftgate window. There is some clouding of the windshield, but otherwise the glass is excellent.

The rear seats, and the front seatback, are original brown artificial leather and show considerable cracking and some deteriorated stitching, but are serviceable. The front has a new black rubber floor mat, while the rear mats appear original. The dashboard retains its original walnut woodgrain, showing some wear, and the original instruments and Deluxe steering wheel are all very nice. There is a working electric clock in the glove box door.

The engine compartment is unrestored but clean, showing just the soil of recent driving. The undercarriage has seen much use and exhibits surface rust, but is generally solid and serviceable. Goodyear 6.50-16 blackwall tires, new in 1997, compliment restored wheels and hub caps. The spare is mounted on the tailgate under a metal cover.

The car’s body number dates from May 1937, and the “B” denotes the Deluxe Accessory Group with which it is equipped. A time warp of originality, it carries a 1937 Alton, Illinois, auto license on the windshield, and vintage travel decals on the side windows. Currently registered with California year-of-manufacture plates P/C J3789, which go with the car, it has covered over 65,000 miles and is ready for many more.
