1939 Ford Deluxe Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 185006417

Sold for $203,500

Model 91A. 85 bhp, 221 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear end, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 112"

Every collector, no matter how large or small, how focused or how broad, has favorites. Nick Alexander is no exception. He frequently tells visitors “You may have noticed we like ‘39s.” Only the least observant could miss the clue. When all the cars are lined up in order of seniority, when one sees the 1939s, it is obvious: there’s a blue one, and a green one, and a black one…

The choice is not accidental. For Mr. Alexander, the 1939 Deluxe station wagon represents the best combination of the new and the old: new with hydraulic brakes and leather-faced seats. The ’39 is also old with floor shift, indoor spare, suicide rear doors, and old in its ride and handling, which he prefers to the 1940 and later models. The 1939s are also the last Deluxe Fords to have the clean, pointed nose of which Edsel Ford was so fond. For the first time the headlights were recessed smoothly into the front fenders, but for the last time they had free-form lenses, unconstrained by the new round shape of standardized sealed beams.

Beautifully painted in Jefferson Blue, this 1939 Deluxe wagon has gorgeous original Birch frame and panels, its exotic grains enhanced by expertly applied multiple coats of marine quality varnish. The doors all shut well and alignment is excellent. The roof is newly covered in brown imitation leather, and the paint exhibits a deep shine. The brightwork is all excellent, including the outside mirror mounted to the drivers’ door hinge. The running board is new and the glass is superb as well, with Ford script hallmarks.

Inside, the seat cushions are upholstered in brown leather, and the floor mats are new. There are lap belts in the front for two and the dashboard is correctly woodgrained in Mahogany. As for the instruments, they are nicely restored. The Deluxe steering wheel has a gray rim and bright “banjo” spokes, and glove box door carries an eight-day clock. The spare tire is mounted to the back of the driver’s seat, and furnished with a matching cover.

The engine is painted in correct Ford green, and is clean but not over-detailed. The chassis and underbody are painted in gloss black and are very clean and the car is fitted with Goodyear 6.50-16 blackwalls, installed in 2004.

This car was the recipient of a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V8 Club at Abilene, Texas, in 2005, and was judged at 995 points. Like all the cars in the collection, it runs and drives well and is exercised regularly. Purchased by Mr. Alexander in December 2002, it currently shows slightly more than 80,000 miles and is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 1J752, which go with the car. The body number dates from June 1939.

This collection has some of the finest 1939 woodies in existence. Handsomely presented in Jefferson Blue with a Dearborn Award to boot, this Deluxe Station Wagon is a particularly lovely example, sure to delight its new owner
