Lot 118

1940 Ford Standard Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 185306427

Sold for $110,000

Model 01A. 85 bhp, 221 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear end, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 112"

For 1940, Ford continued the policy of modeling the forward sheet metal of the Standard model on the previous year’s Deluxe. This maintained corporate identity, while exhibiting an obvious distinction to those who purchased the upscale car. As in previous years, the Standard lacked bright windshield moldings, and had a subdued grille. Further, while it shared with the Deluxe model the new steering column shift and sealed beam headlamps, the latter were surrounded by painted rims. Color choices were limited to three: Black, Lyon Blue and Cloud Mist Gray.

Inside, the seats were artificial leather, while the Deluxe had genuine leather facings, and the dashboard was painted in the single color Briarwood Brown. As before, there was no armrest for the center seat. The $75.00 price differential did not dissuade many buyers, as Deluxe wagons outsold the Standard 8,468 to 3,257.

The Standard station wagon appealed to commercial and government users because of its low price. All its practical aspects were the equal of the Deluxe, and such customers as the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water found it entirely satisfactory.

A nearly original car, this 1940 Standard Station wagon has had its Iron Mountain Maple framewood and Birch panels varnished to perfection, but the rest displays an enviable state of preservation. The Lyon Blue paint is thin from polishing and shows a number of scrapes and scratches. The brightwork is similarly dull, the bumpers flaking and rusted, and the pot metal trim is noticeably pitted. The glass shows significant separation. The overall effect, however, is one of gentle patina, and not completely out of character with the newly-refinished wood and the new black artificial leather top. The wood body is straight and true, and all doors shut well with even gaps.

The seats remain in their original artificial leather, which shows significant cracking and extreme wear on the second seat. The front is furnished with lap belts for two. The front floor mat is original brown rubber and fairly presentable; the rear is new black rubber. The dashboard is original and polished up nicely. It shows only moderate wear, and the Standard steering wheel is in similar condition.

The engine compartment is clean, but not overly detailed. The chassis and underbody are clean and painted black, showing only the soil of moderate use. Fitted with Goodyear 6.50-16 blackwall tires, it has a tailgate mounted spare. The metal cover for the spare has a few dents.

The very low body number dates from September of 1939. The car runs and drives well, currently showing about 1,500 miles on the odometer. It is equipped with a Columbia two-speed rear axle, which makes freeway cruising effortless. Purchased by Mr. Alexander in December 2007, it took part in the Wavecrest woodie show at San Diego in September 2008. The 200-mile round trip was a perfect way to break in the fresh engine rebuild performed by master mechanic Tim Krehbiel. The car is registered in California with year-of-manufacture plates 66P303, which are included in the sale.
