Lot 141

1946 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman Convertible

  • Chassis no. 99A1236365

Sold for $242,000

Model 69A. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. L-head V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia overdrive, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

Although Ford was the first American automaker to return to production after World War II, starting the assembly line on July 3, 1945, it was months before cars became available to customers. The first public showing of the Ford line took place on October 26. The new Sportsman models took even longer to reach production. Although announced in September, the first car was not delivered until Christmas.

So even though the 1946 model year was long, a full 18 months, Sportsman production reached only 1,209 units, barely half that achieved in 1947. Restyling from 1942 was modest: a new horizontal four-bar grille, new hood ornament and bumper guards. Nearly everything else was the same. The engine gained ten horsepower, courtesy of Mercury’s 239 cubic inches, and the entry-level Special series was laid to rest. Rationalization of the product line left fewer distinct body styles, despite addition of the Sportsman to the top-line Super Deluxe catalog.

To paraphrase an old adage, the beauty was in the details. The grille, taillights, hubcaps, wheels, dashboard and instruments all had nice delicate red accent lines, regardless of exterior color. There was even a red-outline Ford oval on the rear bumper.

This nicely restored early Ford Sportsman is attractive in Dark Slate Gray Metallic. The paint looks new, and exhibits a deep shine. The body contours are excellent, and the wood is in pristine condition and highly varnished. The doors shut well and fit properly. The black canvas top has red piping which nicely compliments the red trim accents, particularly in this color combination. The wheels have matching red stripes and there is also a matching top boot.

All the brightwork is excellent and the chrome looks new. The Ford script glass is excellent, and the running board rubber is also new. Inside, nice red leather seats contrast with the gray exterior paint, the leather looks new, and there are lap belts for two in front. The dashboard has been restored in Maple wood grain by the original Ford etched plate process deftly applied by Jaime Torres of Alexander Restoration. The instruments and steering wheel have also been restored. The front floor mats are black rubber, with tan carpet inserts. The rear seat area is carpeted in matching tan. There is a heater and an electric clock and the black top is lined in tan canvas.

The 59AB engine and compartment are nicely detailed and the engine has the standard bypass oil filter on the left cylinder head; all hardware is appropriate and the compartment is very clean. The chassis and underbody are painted in gloss black, and are very clean. The car is fitted with Firestone 6.50-16 tires, installed in 2006, and there is a matching spare in the trunk.

Nick Alexander purchased this Sportsman from renowned Ford restorer Tom Sharp of Kent, in October 2005. Tom had restored the chassis and acquired all necessary body parts, seating, top and hardware, among other components. Nick and his crew did all the paint and body work, wood fitting and varnishing of a beautiful Maple and Mahogany body by Bob Brown and Son of Sedro Woolley, Washington. Finally, assembly was completed by Alexander Restoration just in time to receive 999 points and a Dearborn Award. At the 2007 Temecula meet the lost point was a missing Ford logo on the rear convertible window that has since been added.

The car runs and drives well and the indicated mileage is under 300, possibly on the second time around. The Columbia two-speed axle permits freeway travel without stress, and the car is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 9E468. A stunning turnkey Sportsman, it is sure to be the envy of every early Ford V8 enthusiast.
