Most of the woodies in the Nick Alexander Collection retain their original wood, restored to the best possible condition. In a few cases, the condition of a car’s wood has made this impossible. Mr. Alexander’s preferred alternative is expert surgery or reconstruction using new old stock wood. This car is such a case.

Discovered as a low-mileage car on Michigan’s Northern Peninsula, not far from Iron Mountain, it had been pushed into a shed and left for many years. Unfortunately, the shed was about three feet shorter than the car, so the back end was exposed to the weather. While the sheltered portions – nose, doors and most of the roof – had been well-protected, the last three feet were badly weathered. The rear quarters and tailgate simply couldn’t be saved.

“We went out and found some NOS Iron Mountain pieces,” Mr. Alexander said. “It’s all Ford wood.” Such is the quality of the restoration that one is hard-pressed to detect that it has not been together all its life. The doors all shut well, and the overall effect is excellent. The sheet metal is all excellent, and the Glade Green paint exhibits a deep shine. The roof is covered in new brown artificial leather.

An August 1947 car, it postdates the spring trim revision, when the carryover 1946 red-accent motif was exchanged for a plainer, simpler image. This car has the round parking lights under the headlamps, rather than rectangular lenses in the fender catwalk. The hubcaps also have the simpler new design. All the brightwork is excellent, and most of the glass carries original Ford script. A few pieces show some minor separation.

While 1946 Ford station wagons had seats with genuine leather facings and artificial sides, the 1947 models went to tan vinyl throughout. This car’s seats are new brown artificial leather, the front furnished with lap belts for two. There are new black rubber mats, front and rear. The dashboard has beautiful original maple woodgrain, and excellent original plastic. It has an electric clock, recently rebuilt, and the car is also equipped with radio and heater.

The 59AB engine is nicely detailed in blue, and the entire engine compartment is clean. All hardware is correct and appropriate, but has not been over-restored. The chassis and underbody are nicely painted in gloss black, and are clean but not excessively detailed. The car rides on Goodyear 6.50-16 blackwall tires, installed in 2000.

Purchased by Nick Alexander from Heritage Motors of Marquette, Michigan, in September 1998, it received a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V8 Club in 2000 at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Currently showing just over 31,000 miles, it runs and drives well, its Columbia rear axle making long distance travel a pleasure. Horsepower has been increased with a four-inch Mercury crankshaft and later Mercury camshaft while outward appearance remains completely stock. It is registered in California with year-of-manufacture plates 20B4007, which go with the car.

When the 1947 model year closed, Ford had turned out 16,104 station wagons. This was not a record; 1946 had been slightly better. But the 1946 model year extended a full six months longer, making the 1947 production record that much more remarkable. This car represents a chance to acquire a station wagon from the height of Ford’s postwar popularity.
