Lot 117

1947 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 799A1421452

Sold for $88,000

Model 79A. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear end, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

This car, perhaps, best embodies Nick Alexander’s collecting philosophy: preservation of original features to the extent possible. He is a lover of original wood and glass, accepting a few blemishes in order to retain originality. Few cars in the collection have whitewall tires (“To begin with, I don’t like them, but they also draw the eye away from the wood, which should be the focal point of the car”), and the array of accessories is limited. Aside from a Columbia rear axle for ease of freeway use, none are added simply for the sake of accessorizing.

Most collectors will relish this car’s faithfulness to originality, while the less discerning may consider it simply a work in progress. A January 1947 car, it retains the trim features of the 1946 models.. The original maple frame wood projects the warm glow that comes from first grown timber and preserved by countless coats of expertly applied marine varnish. The original mahogany panels are also carefully varnished to show off their beautiful grain. The body is well aligned, and the doors shut well and have even gaps. The front clip and windshield portions are straight and true and retain their original Dark Slate Gray Metallic paint, evenly faded. The rear fenders and spare tire cover have been repainted in new Dark Slate Gray Metallic.

The roof is newly covered in black artificial leather. The original script glass is present, and is very presentable save for some very slight separations. The running board rubber is original and shows very slight wear.

Inside, the 63 year-old tan vinyl seats are original and show remarkably little wear for their age. There are lap belts for two in the front as well as new rubber floor mats for the front and middle seats. The rear seat area has its original mat, which has a few tears. The dashboard has good original woodgrain, and the instruments and plastic are also in good condition. The electric clock keeps time. The steering wheel, however, is worn and the car has a heater but no radio, nor is there an outside mirror. In keeping with the Alexander philosophy, that’s the way it was built, so that’s they way it has stayed.

The engine and chassis, however, are unrestored. There has been some touch-up in the engine compartment, the bypass oil filter canister and air cleaner newly painted, but the rest show their age. The rear axle area is clean and painted, probably from the time the Columbia rear axle was installed. The car is equipped with Firestone 6.50-16 blackwalls, installed in 2005.

Purchased by Nick Alexander in June 2005, the car received a Rouge Award for preservation from the Early Ford V8 Club at Temecula, California, in 2007. It runs and drives well, and is currently registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 60M336, which go with the car. The new owner of this car will have a choice to incrementally improve this car or simply to love it the way it is.
