Lot 109

1947 Ford Super Deluxe Tudor Sedan

  • Chassis no. 799A1751951

Sold for $33,000

Model 79A. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear end, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

On December 7, 1945, Henry Henglefelt placed a $50 deposit on a new Ford at Bomgardner Motor Company, the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealer in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Because of the high demand for postwar cars and the slow rate at which manufacturers were able to re-establish production, Mr. Hinglefelt’s car was not delivered until July 3, 1947, a full two years after the Ford production lines resumed operation. The purchase price was $1,441.36, and Mr. Hinglefelt traded in a 1938 Ford Tudor. The dealer installed a set of seat covers before the car was driven away.

Three months later, Henglefelt died. His wife did not drive, so the car was used only by her brother, who lived on an adjacent farm. For six years, the brother, E.F. Koenig, took Mrs. Henglelfelt to town in the car about every two weeks. After that, it was parked until her death in 1974.

At her passing, the car was inherited by Mr. Koenig and his wife, Fern. The Koenigs registered it with Historical Vehicle plates, but drove it little. They either gave or sold it to their nephew, Dean Versaw of Loveland, Colorado. Versaw sold it to Frank Elliott of Denver, Colorado, in September 1981. The dealer-installed seat covers were still on the car, but had deteriorated, so Elliott removed them. The covers are undoubtedly responsible for the superb condition of the interior today.

Showing fewer than 12,000 miles, this 1947 Ford Tudor remains nearly the same as it was when purchased by Mr. Henglefelt. The body is straight and true, but for a small ding in the left rear fender. The doors shut well, with even gaps. The original Rotunda Gray paint is good, showing just a few scrapes. The brightwork has minimal scratches, and the original rubber running boards and gravel shields are in good condition. The glass is very good, although a windshield appears to have been replaced.

The original gray cloth interior is excellent: seats, door panels and headliner. The front seat has lap belts for two. There is an original black rubber mat in front and a brown fiber mat in back, both in good condition. The dashboard exhibits good original gray paint and very good plastic. The original steering wheel is excellent, as are the instruments. The car has a hot water heater, but no radio.

The 59AB engine still shows remnants of the factory blue paint and the engine compartment is clean but not excessively detailed. The chassis exhibits original black paint. The tires are Firestone 6.50-16 blackwalls and there is a matching spare. The trunk mat is the original rubber item.

Purchased by Nick Alexander from Frank Elliott in October 2005, the car received Rouge Award recognition for body, interior and chassis from the Early Ford V8 Club at Keystone, Colorado. Mr. Alexander installed the Columbia rear axle for easier operation on local freeways. Currently registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 76U823, which go with the car, it is ready to be enjoyed by a new owner.
