1947 Mercury Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 799A1945936

Sold for $159,500

Model 79M. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia rear end, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 118"

Demand for new cars was such after World War II that manufacturers didn’t have to spend much time or money on model changes. Chrysler Corporation dispensed with visual distinctions entirely, building cars from 1946 into 1949 that were virtually indistinguishable from the previous year’s models. General Motors did observe the annual model dictum, part of chairman Alfred Sloan’s corporate plan, but the changes were limited to grille and trim variations. Ford Motor Company more or less split the difference, with one mild makeover after the first 18 months of postwar production.

Mercury, like Ford, had new “spring models” ready for April 1947. Unlike Ford, however, Mercury’s changes principally concerned the grille, which added chrome plating to the heavy surround on the upper section. The body side trim was truncated on the after portion of the hood, where a new “MERCURY” nameplate was added. Hubcaps were redesigned and given black lettering and white accents, and heavy wingtips were added to the front bumper. Interior changes were less extensive on station wagons than other body styles, amounting to new instrument faces and a redecorated steering wheel. Ten new exterior color choices were offered.

Fully restored in rich Rotunda Gray, a new spring color, this 1947 Mercury station wagon is a multiple prize winner. The body contours are all flawless, and the paint shows a good, deep shine. The wood is all original maple and mahogany and is superbly varnished. Alignment of the body is excellent, and all the doors shut well and have even gaps. The brown artificial leather roof covering is new. The brightwork is all excellent, and the running board rubber is new. The glass is all original Ford script panes, with minimal separation on the vent windows and sliding sections.

The seats are newly upholstered in correct red leather and the front has lap belts for two. The floor mats are new black rubber, the front with brown carpet inserts. As for the dashboard, the original woodgrain attests to the incredible level of care this Mercury has received over the years. The original instruments, dashboard plastic and steering wheel are all likewise excellent. Features include a radio, heater and electric clock.

The 59AB engine is correctly restored and detailed, and has the appearance of a nearly new car that is used very carefully. The chassis and underbody are painted gloss black, correctly detailed but not overdone, and showing a little bit of road soil. Firestone 7.10-15 blackwalls were installed in 2000 and a spare is located under a metal cover on the tailgate.

Purchased by Mr. Alexander in April 2000, the car received a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V8 Club at Park City, Utah, in 2002. It was judged at 993 points. In August 2003, it was judged Best of Show at the annual All Mercury Day in Anaheim, California. With about 81,000 miles on the odometer, it runs and drives well. A Columbia rear axle makes short work of any terrain or freeway tour. It is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 23K245, which go with the car, and remains a stunning woodie in every regard.
