Lot 130

1948 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon

  • Chassis no. 899A2251597

Sold for $137,500

Model 89A. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with Columbia overdrive, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

The short 1948 model year brought few changes to the Ford line. Aside from the new design steering wheel-ignition lock, the most obvious distinction came in colors. Although most 1947 colors were carried over, several new hues were added, among them Blue Gray Metallic, Strata Blue and Shoal Green Gray. The Blue Gray Metallic was available on Ford only, while the other two were designated for both Ford and Mercury.

Shoal Green Gray is one of the subtle colors for which Ford was well known. Like 1941’s Lockhaven Green, it has undertones of a lighter color, and compliments the light and dark wood of the station wagon body very well. Equally attractive with blackwall or whitewall tires, it looks green in some lights, gray in others.

Nick acquired this low mileage beautifully maintained wagon with 41,000 miles and restored it as necessary. It basks in its Shoal Green Gray finish. The paint exhibits a good shine, and the frame wood is Birch.. In the Ford forests Birch trees were outnumbered by the maple trees by about four-to-one, so birch bodies are seen less often. This body is one of the finest examples of birch with exotic grain patterns including Tiger Stripes and a wide variation in color, expertly varnished to show its finest qualities. As proof of its high level of maintenance, the roof retains its original black artificial leather covering. The brightwork is excellent, the original script glass showing some patina on the vent windows. The original running boards look as new, but the stone guards are original and have a few very minor blemishes.

The brown leather seats are new, the front furnished with lap belts for two, and the floor has new black rubber mats, front and rear. The dashboard has very good original maple woodgrain, with excellent plastic, and the steering wheel and instruments appear to have been restored. Additionally, this woodie is equipped with a deluxe heater and clock.

Nick Alexander restores the cars optioned the way he receives them, adding only a Columbia rear axle if available new on that model. Many of his cars lack a radio, heater or both. He also prefers blackwall tires. While waiting for one of his cars to be judged at a meet, he overheard some passers-by: “Look at that. Such a nice car and the owner can’t even afford whitewalls or a radio.” But, unbeknownst to these observers, the adherence to originality and purity is precisely Mr. Alexander’s aim.

This car’s 59AB engine is clean and correctly painted in Ford blue, but is not over-restored. The chassis and underbody are painted black, clean but not detailed. 6.50-16 Goodyear blackwalls were installed in 2005 and the spare is mounted on the tailgate under a metal cover.

Purchased from a Pennsylvania owner in February 2005, this car was given a Dearborn Award by the Early Ford V8 Club later that year at Keystone, Colorado, judged at 978 points. Currently showing slightly more than 42,000 miles, it runs and drives well. The Columbia rear axle makes freeway driving easy. It is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 50V193, which go with the car.
