Lot 111

1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Tudor Sedan

  • Chassis no. B0CH106630

Sold for $27,500

Model 0BA. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

Advertised as “50 Ways Finer,” the 1950 Fords introduced many improvements over their groundbreaking 1949 predecessors. New rotary door latches with pushbutton handles replaced pull-type openers, and the gas filler cap was relocated behind an access door. Most obvious were new parking lights, and a revised trunk handle. The top-line Custom series was renamed “Custom Deluxe” in the sales literature, although the car itself was badged simply “Custom.” The Custom Deluxe Tudor was the most popular body style, with more than 433,000 sold.

An incredibly well-preserved original car, this 1950 Tudor sedan has covered barely 22,000 miles. Built in Chicago, its body is solid and straight, showing, amazingly, no external dings or scrapes. The original Palisade Green paint has become slightly dull, and there are a few wear spots on the left front fender and trunk. There is also a bit of chipping on the trunk lift handle. The brightwork is original and very nice, but for a few scratches, and the Ford script glass shows separation only on the front vent windows.

The interior retains its original gray striped cloth, which looks almost new. The front seat has lap belts for two. The door panels, with their hardware, arm rests and ornamentation, are in excellent condition. The gray carpet in the rear is original, while the black rubber mat in front looks new. The gray cloth headliner is also very nice, the trunk is clean, but its original black rubber mat shows some wear. An original bumper jack is stowed behind the spare tire and the car is equipped with a push-button radio, Magic Air heater, and an electric clock.

The 8BA engine retains much of its original gold paint, but shows evidence of use. The chassis is unrestored, and has minor surface rust, but is solid underneath. The tires are Firestone 6.70-15 blackwalls, new in 2005; the spare is Goodyear and appears to be original.

Purchased in November 2005, the car earned Triple Rouge honors (body, interior, chassis) from the Early Ford V8 Club at Keystone, Colorado, that same year. Registered in California with year-of-manufacture plates 9M682, which go with the car, it can be driven anywhere. It is perhaps the nearest thing to a new 1950 Ford to be found.
