Lot 153

1951 Ford Country Squire

  • Chassis no. BIKC136983

Sold for $88,000

Model 1BA. 100 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114"

For 1951, the name “Country Squire” was finally applied to the outside of the car, beginning a 41-year tradition. The late-1950 configuration was continued and mated to the new 1951 front clip. Most 1951 Fords received a new dashboard in the process, with key-turn starter start to the left of the steering wheel. Because of difference in the cowl width, however, the Country Squire retained the 1949-50 style dashboard, which was two-toned, the upper portion in deep maroon, the lower section in Prima Vera woodgrain. The new triangular spoke steering wheel from the other cars, however, was used.

The steel tailgate carried over, but for 1951 it got the Mercury treatment, with woodgrained maple and mahogany to harmonize with the side panels. Although the folding second seat facilitated conversion to cargo configuration, the third seat still had to be manually removed and a filler panel inserted to create a flat load deck. Once this was accomplished, however, a nine-foot linoleum-lined deck was available for luggage, furniture, or other bulky items.

Mechanically, the 1951 Fords differed little from the previous year. There were hyperbolic names for many features – “Equa-flow” cooling, “Rota-quiet” valves, “Silent-spin” three-blade fan – but they described what were really very ordinary technology. What was most new about the 1951 Ford was the optional Fordomatic Drive. A three-speed torque converter automatic, it was developed in conjunction with Borg-Warner, and was a quite advanced for its day. A true three-speed, it did not use the lowest gear ratio unless manually selected. In “Drive” position, only the top two gears came into play. Standard three-speed manual transmission was still the base specification, and overdrive, with which this car is equipped, was optional.

This 1951 Country Squire was restored many years ago by Ford enthusiast and restorer Bill Phillips. It won an Early Ford V8 Club Dearborn Award in 1991, and a medallion at Bend Oregon in 1995. Phillips drove the car more than 20,000 miles to Club meets.

The Greenbriar Green paint remains in very good condition, but shows a few minor blemishes. The original wood is excellent and includes a few pieces of the coveted birdseye maple. All the varnish is excellent. The glass, all with Lincoln script, has just a bit of separation on the vent windows.

The seats are done in beige and brown vinyl, and look new. The floors have new black rubber mats, front and rear, and the dashboard woodgrain is original, and shows a bit of wear around the glove box door. The steering wheel and instruments are in excellent condition and the car is equipped with radio, Magic Air heater, clock and windshield washer.

The 8BA engine is correctly painted in gold, and is clean but not over-detailed. Painted black, the chassis and underbody are generally clean but not detailed. There is some soil from road use. The car is equipped with Firestone 7.10-15 blackwall tires, new in 2000, and the spare is tailgate-mounted, under a body color metal cover.

Purchased by Nick Alexander in February 1999, it currently shows slightly over 22,000 miles since restoration. Like all cars in the collection, it runs and drives well. It is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 4U6585, which go with the car.
