Lot 155

1952 Ford Crestline Country Squire

  • Chassis no. B2CH133584

Sold for $38,500

Model B2. 110 bhp, 239.4 cu. in. Flathead V8 engine, three-speed Fordomatic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 115"

Ford cars for 1952 were almost completely new. Bodies were fresh and modern, and a new chassis had greater strength and rigidity. The self-shifting Fordomatic transmission, in its second year, was becoming very popular, and a new overhead valve six developed more power than its smaller predecessor. Only the Flathead V8 carried over, but it, too, had more power courtesy of higher compression.

With Iron Mountain closed, station wagons were now built at the Rouge plant in Dearborn and were all steel – only the prestige Country Squire had any wood, and that was simply ornamental. Varnished maple from Ionia-Mitchell Company outlined a side accent of Di-Noc imitation woodgrain. The Country Squire was part of the upscale Crestline series, and had seating for nine, the rear cushions folding to form a long flat cargo area. The middle seat was split asymmetrically to facilitate access to the rear.

This well-maintained 1952 Country Squire has been repainted in original Meadowbrook Green. The paint exhibits a good shine, and body contours are excellent. The maple side trim is original and beautifully varnished. The upper section of the woodgrained greenhouse has weathered somewhat. The car’s brightwork is very good. Some of the chrome is new, and, except for some minor scratches and pits, makes a good impression.

Inside, the original beige and brown imitation leather interior is in good condition, except for a few stains. The inner door panels are woodgrained, with beige vinyl accents and arm rests, all very nice. The beige vinyl headliner, however, shows considerable staining. The linoleum on the rear load area and tailgate is somewhat worn and the floor in the load area lifts for access to the spare tire and tools. The compartment needs cleaning but the tailgate and liftgate both operate well.

The dashboard is a very nice example of the original gold metallic color, and the instruments are clean and very presentable. The black plastic steering wheel is in very good condition, but the horn ring shows a little wear on the spokes. The floor has a black rubber mat, which is bunched up on the transmission tunnel. There are black rubber throw mats on each side and the car has a pushbutton AM radio, Magic Air heater, electric clock and windshield washers.

The EAB flathead engine is clean and retains much of its original orange paint. A Strato-Star OEM bypass oil filter is mounted to the left cylinder head. The whole of the engine compartment is clean and serviceable, but is not detailed. The chassis and underbody are solid but unrestored and original undercoating is very much in evidence.

Purchased by Nick Alexander in May 2005, the title still showed the original owner to be Charlie A. Comiskey of Hillsdale, Illinois, then owner of the Chicago White Sox and the man for whom the team’s stadium was named. The car earned a Rouge Award for preservation of originality from the Early Ford V8 Club at Temecula, California, in 2007. It runs and drives well, and shows slightly over 53,000 miles. It is registered with California year-of-manufacture plates 4M4758, which go with the car. A nice original example of Ford’s first Rouge-built station wagons, it will be ideal for show, for touring or simply for enjoyment.
