Lot 159

1957 Ford Ranch Wagon

  • Chassis no. A7FR272827

Sold for $33,000

144 bhp, 223 cu. in. ohv inline six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 116"

After World War II, Ford concentrated on building only one model of station wagon, initially with four doors. The redesigned 1949 models adopted a two-door design, but still in only one series. However, the next generation, introduced in February 1952, offered not one station wagon but four: a two-door Ranch Wagon, a four-door Country Sedan, available with seating for either six or eight, and at the top of the catalog the wood-accented Country Squire. The Ranch Wagon, most utilitarian and least flashy of the four, sold best. This array of station wagons continued, with some additional trim variations, through 1961.

Delivered by Borchers Ford of Dayton, Ohio, on April 29, 1957, this car was purchased by Paul S. Stoppleman for $2,970,16. It remained in Ohio for the next 37 years. Equipped with overdrive, the car is also fitted with a five-button AM radio and hot water heater.

The body has a high quality repaint in the original Willow Green. Its only flaw is a chip in the left front fender. The brightwork exhibits a few scratches on the rear bumper, and some pits on the tailgate handle. The glass is all good, with the exception of some separation in the vent windows.

The Ranch Wagon seats six. The front bench and folding rear seat are upholstered in their original vinyl; the front has lap belts for two. The seats and tri-tone door panels are in very good condition. The headliner, in a gold weave material, is likewise very good. The unpadded dashboard is detailed, and the black three-spoke steering wheel is in very good condition. Black rubber floor mats look new, but there is some wear to the linoleum on the load deck.

The chassis and underbody are unrestored, and coated with black undercoating. The engine is spotless but not excessively detailed. It was rebuilt by Fetters Racing Engines of Union, Ohio, in 1998 for a previous owner, and runs well. Firestone 7.50-14 blackwall tires were installed in 2004; a matching spare is carried under the load deck. The car joined the Alexander collection in December 2004. It is currently registered in California with year-of-manufacture plates XTY-230, which go with the car.

A great example of the seldom-seen 1957 Ranch Wagon, this car is ready to be driven and enjoyed. Showing slightly more than 65,000 miles on the odometer, it personifies Ford’s most basic 1957 station wagon.
