Porsche was a marque that was virtually unknown in the United States in the early 1950s, but it proved to be a tough sell over the competition from England. Priced higher than many British sports cars, U.S. dealer and distributor Max Hoffman knew that Porsche needed a solid competitor priced below $3,000 to compete. The new 356 Speedster proved to be just what Porsche needed.

Fitted with a more aggressive windshield, bucket seats, and a light convertible top, the model proved to be the perfect bare-bones sports car and was a huge hit in warm weather locales. Speedsters flew off of Hoffman’s showroom floor and onto the racetrack at SCCA events around the country. Fitted with either a ‘Normal’ 1,500-cubic centimetre engine or the larger 1,600-cubic centimetre ‘Super’, the 356 Speedster quickly proved itself in competition in Europe as well, consistently winning their classes at hill climbs and circuit racing events.

Finished in Silver over black, this lovely Pre-A Speedster presents very well throughout. Having been kept in a large collection of significant Porsches in Switzerland, it stands tall amongst its more valuable garage mates as an icon of 1950’s design. Arguably one of the most iconic cars to ever leave Stuttgart, the 356 Speester is a car that transcends generations. Just as desirable today as when it was new, a well-kept Speedster is a must-own automobile for any enthusiast.

This particular example saw pride of place in a collection of highly significant Porsches and will certainly please its next owner.
