Nineteen seventy-five marked the end of the mid-engined 914; unfortunately for Porsche, the 924 was not yet fully developed. The marque had to produce a car for the popular-price market, yet they did not have the time to create an entirely new model. Thinking quickly, Porsche decided to marry the classic VW-based four-cylinder engine with a restyled G-series 911 body. They named it the 912 E, for Einspritzer, or fuel injection.

The last 912 had rolled off the line in 1969 – since then, Porsche had made several upgrades. The 912 E was based off the 911 2.7 body, and it took a practiced eye to tell the difference. Mechanically, the engine was identical to the previous 914’s, except for the addition of the 911’s K-Jetronic fuel injection system. The fuel injection increased performance of the four-cylinder engine to 90 brake horsepower and produced top speeds of 115 mph. At the time, the 912 E was well reviewed, and Road & Track proclaimed, ‘It’s a car with almost all the sporting virtues of the more expensive 911 S.’

The 912 E performed well for a car that was offered for only one year, and it is now considered a highly collectable four-cylinder Porsche. Presented here in Red over a black interior is a chance to own one of the most interesting Porsches available today.
