  • First production Porsche to use a V-8 engine
  • Desirable touring class Porsche with a production run spanning two decades

The 928 line began in 1978 looking to possibly replace the 911. Porsche decided to try something different; instead of a true sports car, it designed a grand tourer. One of Porsche’s rare front-engined models, it was the first production model to be powered by a V-8. In order to get the best performance out of the car, the designers utilised a 50/50 weight distribution by balancing the engine with a rear transaxle. This balance, along with the higher power output, helped the heavier car handle smoother. By far the most innovative feat of engineering was the inclusion of the Weissach Axel – a rear axle that allows for passive rear-wheel steering, creating increased stability while braking during a turn.

The model went through several evolutions in its two-decade run. An updated 928 S hit European markets in 1980 and came with a 4,700-cubic centimetre engine and an increase of 60 brake horsepower. While these bigger engines would not hit North American markets for another three years, the United States market was offered several special models such as the ‘Competition Group’ and the ‘Weissach Edition’.

An S4 model became available in 1987, followed by Club Sport and GT variants. Finally, in 1992, the GTS became available. The final 928, it offered a more powerful 5,400-cubic centimetre engine alongside larger front brakes and updated bodywork. A fully loaded 928 GTS was among the most expensive cars on the road at the time.
Offered here is an excellent example of Porsche’s original sedan, finished in elegant Black with a grey interior. The ultimate iteration of a model that spanned two decades, the 928 GTS combined the sporty handling of the 911 with the luxury and refinement of a top-of-the-line sedan.
